I understand your frustration. I too would love to master the fine art of photography. I believe that the answers lie in the lighting. How much and what typeof  light to use, where to place the light, ie. around your subject, on your subject behind your subject etc...It all depends on what you are looking for in the photo. I'm just now beginning to learn how to use the aperature setting on my camera. Also, now-a-days a good photo editing tool can be of help. Of course I'm not a professional and I'm sure that there are better answers out there. This is just my unprofessional opinion.

Light.  and dark.
Where the light isn't can be as important as where it is.
Quality of light - hard, soft, colour, shape, distance, angle etc.

Have a look at the strobist lighting 101 - http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101.html
It's a crash course in off camera lighting. The rest of the site is very good too.

You don't generally "snap a perfect photo" - The best photos are made, not taken.

I would recommend watching a pro at work - how the lighting is set up, what angles are used, the general atmosphere. Look on the bar at the right on the strobist site, and find the "video archive" drop down box. There is a lot of good stuff in there.

You can't rely on photoshop to make a perfect shot from a rubbish one. Trust me, I've tried. smile

What sort of camera do you have?
