Print a photo on soft acyrlic

Hi, I want to make some gifts for some special girlfriends. I need to know if you can print a photo onto some type of soft acrylic that would stick to glass (on the outside)  I want to make the photo stick by static electricity (sort of) Does anyone know how to do this?  Thanks a bunch!

I don't know of any way to do this directly, but here are a few ideas:

If I understand you correctly, you want to make one of those sticky things that attach to windows, but rather than having it as a fairly crude filled outline drawing, you want it to be a photo?

You could consider printing onto inkjet OHP film and sticking it onto the glass with a silicone adhesive. This would be semi permanent, and probably not easily repositionable.

You could also try printing onto OHP film and embedding this into your acrylic sticky stuff.
I think this would work, but you might have to work "backwards" - instead of placing the liquid acrylic stuff onto a sheet of plate glass and laying the print on top, place the print ink side up on a sheet of newspaper, pour the acrylic goo onto it, and place the glass on top of that.
I think this would reduce the chance of air bubbles.

Let us know how you get on (or ask more questions if I'm being too cryptic smile )

You can use this paper to put photos on glass, metal, ceramic, silk, etc.

Some printers have a product specially made for that purpose, they call it electrostatic film. It is usually printed with inkjet printers or by screen printing. But the printers I know that do this are for large format or large quantities answering to commercial needs like stores that want to decorate their windows. So I don't know if it would be worth it for a personal project to go see a printer and I don't know if they do small format on that material.

Maybe the product is available in small sheets that can fit in your home printer, but I don't know either where to find those. I have checked the address suggested by lauracarter and it seems to be transfer paper or glue-sticking paper, not clear acrylic that is statically adhesive (therefore repositionable).

The product large format printer uses is 3M™ Scotchcal™. Here is the link to the manufacturer

I doubt this will help you much... but let me know if going at a printer worked! smile

I think you're talking about window decals, which are made to be stuck on glass, but are re-usable, as they stick by static, and not through adhesives.

Those are pretty easy to come by, and you can find them at places like Staples and OfficeMax. The ones I've seen are sheets of 8 1/2 x 11, so they'll fit in your home printer smile.

Check out the "waterslide decal paper" at http://www.decalpaper.com/. This method gives you a super thin decal that will adhere to most hard surfaces. I've had good luck creating decals with this product.

I agree with Laura and Peter. The waterslide decal paper is what you want. Just as a heads up though you will have to play with your print settings a little in order to get a quality print since it's a specialty paper. I used a paper setting in between matte and semi-gloss and I adjusted the density of the ink a little bit and got some quality results.
