Favorite Macro Pictures

I have been using this macro add on lens the last few days and finally came up with a few good shots of some Lilly of the Valley that I picked at my Mom's house today. Would love to see other pictures you have taken with a macro add on lens! Or is it really called a filter? Just seems like a filter would be something that would block light in some way or discolor it. Or I guess you could be filtering light through a thick macro lens to get a picture that was really magnified. Right? Anyway here are a few shots I took today...

You may have seen this in another thread, but here's one from me anyways. I also have a macro filter, wish I could afford a real macro lens

You've inspired me. I'm going to take mine out today to play. I might try holding my lens backwards against my camera as well, which is supposed to work.

I haven't used mine much. I got it this winter and was waiting for flowers. My favorite of the ones I took when I got it:

From our ice storm in January.. I very carefully "rescued" this leaf encased in glass and brought it inside, laid it on our black desk and attached my macro filter ... voila:

Same Idea, different leaves, more ice:

Good for you, SarahCate. We had an ice storm here in December, and I was so overwhelmed that I only took a couple photos to document the damage -- nothing creative. These are beautiful.

Thanks SD, we don't get much ice in Texas, so when the whole town shut down, decided to go photo hunting in the yard.  It was great!  Got some really amazing shots-- macro and otherwise smile

Thanks Marcie! I used a black piece of paper outside on a table a few hours before the sun was setting and put the flowers on it so the white would show up more. It took me several times to get one that was in focus. I figured out it was easier to manual focus on the flowers. The automatic focusing just seemed to be searching for a focal point and wouldn't lock in very often.

Superdewa- LOVE the cute bug toy! So, what does holding the macro add on lens backwards do?

Ben - was the butterfly alive still?? Butterflies are always too fast for me to get a picture of. :-)

Karrie; Superdewa was probably referring to reversing the whole lens, which works well. I've done this with an old CCTV lens, and although the results weren't particularly sharp, the magnification was amazing!

The butterfly was still alive, although it was very late in the year for them to still be around, so I suspect it didn't last a lot longer. I caught it with a torch and released it into my light tent so it couldn't escape while I shot it.
I got it to sit where I wanted by putting a powerful LED torch against the side of the tent. I turned the torch off just before shooting.

Swintime, normal and wide angle lenses are designed so that the rear of the lens stays far enough from the film or sensor so the SLR's mirror has room to move. If you use on backwards then you have a high magnification lens that only focuses to a couple of inches; the focusing ring doesn't do anything. You need a lens that has an aperture ring so you can set a wide aperture to see and then stop it down to take the picture. Superd mentioned in another thread she has the Nikon AF 50mm f1.8. That lens will work great. She could even get a lens reversing ring to make it easier, they're not expensive. You can use anyones lens reversed on your camera, a 50mm or shorter Pentax lens will work perfectly. You have a D40 if I remember right so your light meter wont work but you have digital camera so you can check the exposures as you go.

Red, when I try my 50mm reversed on my D40, it works if you put it on manual to take the actual picture, but then nothing shows up on the screen, it's just black.

Wow, SarahCate! Those are great. Were they just with a macro filter? What kind of lens did you  use?

Duchess -- I still haven't tried that technique, but there's an interesting group on Flickr called Poor Man's Macro that discusses this technique and others: http://www.flickr.com/groups/poor_mans_macro/

This is one of my faves. Found this interesting critter at a lakeside campground and perched him on a twig for the photo shoot.

Thanks SD.  Believe it or not... it was just my macro setting on the Rebel Xsi  using the kit lens 18-55.  I didn't really have a lot of arm room in the store to pull out and screw on my macro lens without being totally obvious about it so I just got as close as it would focus and started shooting.

I do wish I'd put on the filter though... next time I go to Kohls I'm putting the filter on before we go in.  smile  Lots of good textures to snag in there.
