Black and White Photos
I couldn't find a thread for black and white photos so I decided we needed a black and white thread. If I have overlooked an existing thread let me know and I will transfer this over to it.
I have just done a David Peterson tutorial on the "proper" way to change a photo to b&w. So I gave it a go. At the Beach:

Any helpful critique/comments are welcome.

Nice idea for a thread. Who is David Peterson, Jannz?

I am curious about David as well, do you have a link we could follow for the tutorial?

jannz....I was curious about David Peterson too, so I did a little googling around. There is an e-book "Digital Photography Secrets" by a David Peterson. Is that the course you are using? I also found a free 36-page downloadable site called "Digital Photography Secrets" by David Peterson, which is a nice general overview of digital photography. The e-book costs $47, so it must have a lot more to it. Since I prefer to do my reading in a prone position on the sofa, lengthy e-books are not my thing.
Digital Black & White...some cameras have a black & white setting for taking photos. I've used that function, but I think taking the photo in color and converting it to B&W later gives you more options. I use Picasa3 (free) and it's very simple. I prefer more contrast when you convert to B&W, so I do some adjusting under Tuning (deepen Shadows; sometimes a tiny bit of highlight). Before I had Picasa3, I experimented with printing color photos in B&W, but the trial & error can be costly on the photopaper & ink end.

You found him Belle. Here is the link to his b&w tutorial. He does the tutorial over four different editing programmes - Photoshop CS2, Adobe Photoshop Elements 4, Paintshop Pro X and Picassa. You just select the one you want. http://www.imageeditingsecrets.com/course/6/

Jannz...thanks so much. I learned another (and better) way to convert photos to B&W and Sepia, using Picasa...and besides Peterson has that charming Aussie accent!
I have a whole set of B&W photos on my Flickr site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/belleariel … 721593076/
Unfortunately there are 85 photos in the set...about double the boredom threshold Ben mentioned in another thread...but you really don't have to look at all/any of them.

Belle / Jannz.. Thank you very much for putting this on here. Gotta love learning new tools and techniques! I'll post some of my examples that I used from this B&W tutorial shortly.

Using the great tutorial from David Peterson, I converted an image I took on Thursday, to black and white. As it was an overcast day, after rain, the black and white seemed a better option:

[edit by ben-s: Fixed your image link. When posting from Flickr, you need to go to "all sizes", then select "medium" and grab the link from the smaller box at the bottom of the page. Paste it between your IMG tags, and you're done ]

I don't have very many B & Ws. I must try the "V" key in LR a little more often.
