Happy Accidents
Maybe it's just me but quite often when I take a photograph I'm really pleased with I always feel like I accidently took it. I hope I'm not the only person who does this...?
Here's some photos that I just happen to have accidently pressed the shutter at the right time. Feel free to add your own.
I had just walked into the MTR subway in Hong Kong and decided to take a picture. It just so happened that the train arrived at that precise moment and created all the motion in the shot. I didn't have a clue what settings my camera was on.
In Xian we were wandering arounfd the muslim quarter and I wasn't paying attention (looking through my lens again). This cyclist nearly hit me. I had my 10-20mm lens on if I'd had a VR lens on it wouldn't have worked. I'd attempted panning before but never got a good shot...this was just a sput of the moment snapshot that turned out really well. Haven't succeeded with panning since.

Great shots! And inspiring, too. Now that I'm back in the city, I think I'll give street photography another whirl...So much movement and excitement, it's hard to capture the essence, and I think you did it in those pictures.
This here is one shot I like very very much, as it was a drive-by, and I only got a split second of a chance at it. I didn't notice the scene until we'd turned the corner, and because we were on a busy street I couldn't ask the driver to stop. It's one of my favourite photos from America:

Could stand to be a little better balanced in light, I'm sure, but I love it all the same.

A few days ago we had a big summer rainstorm. I was returning from a errand a nd saw a rainbow. did not have my DSLR with me , but did have my little point and shoot and that's just what I did--ppointed and shot--no composing, so setting the ISO, aperture, or anything else. Just whatever the camera happened to be set on. I finally loaded the shot onto my computer and played with it a little in Aperture. Lo and behold, it was a triple rainbow! I did not see it when I took the shot. Look closely. Excuse the noise.

I was shooting (or trying) to shoot a fireworks display after a ballgame here in Oakland. Most of them weren't anything to brag about...except this one. Totally accidental, I had it on a long exposure and was just shooting just to see what would happen.

Isn't experimenting fun!? Sometimes produces pleasant surprises like yours, Gerry!

Hey Whees I LOVE your bike photo! Wow! Here's one similar to it. I was hiking some trails with my lab Marley and accidentally snapped this one. I really like the panning effect and the leash coming up to the camera. Not the best quality but still really like it.

This is one I accidentally took in the Queen Street Mall. I thought it would be one I would have to delete, but I was quite surprised by the outcome. By the way, I am not that "large" :-). Had a heavy coat on and camera case to add to my "bulk" (well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!<LOL>):

Experimenting is fun, teach! But the bad thing is...if I tried a million times, I'll probably never be able to reproduce that shot. It was total luck.

Your experimental fireworks shot came out brilliantly, Gerry !
Love the subway and man on a bike shots, too.

Love that shot of the man on the bike. Panning seems like mostly luck.

Some really great shots here. Gerry, that fireworks picture is great!
I went to a friends firework party and gave my wife the point & shoot as I was doing the fun job of lighting the fireworks. After the party I looked at the photos and they had all turned out brilliant I asked what settings she had used and she just said "the fireworks mode". I had tried no end of times using my DSLR to capture fireworks like she had managed handheld with the P&S first try....lol

@Degilbo: Don't you remember that the camera adds 10 pounds? That's what I always heard!
@Wheesterface: I think that bike shot is fantastic--and even more so because it's in b&w!
Here's one I snapped quickly of my dog, Daisy. Hard to believe she will be 9 years old next week!

Pittburgh...in a bus on one of the 400 bridges, trying to get a photo of one of the 3 rivers....where did that come from? But I kind of like it.

Degilbo, your shadow reminded me of this photo:

I was snapping photos at a friend's child's party, mostly to keep myself busy, and also in hopes I'd have something to give her. I never expected this photo to work out -- middle of the afternoon, full sun. I assumed I'd be deleting it. The shadows were a pleasant surprise when I got on my computer that evening. Turns out the full sun was in my favor.

The shadows really make the picture come alive, especially the jumper in the middle.

My grandson has been taking random photos with my broken camera--no viewfinder or screen, must leave on auto and just point and shoot not knowing what you'll get. We're having fun with it! He took these the other day while we were on our Grandma and Dylan day.
