The Lomography Belair X 6-12
God damnit! I need another camera like I need a hole in my head, but I wouldn't mind getting a medium format camera that's more reliably than the Diana F+, and this one looks pretty damn sweet:

So they've got a 30% off deal going on (299 down to 209) and then another 10% off with a ILOVELOMO code, making it 188 and change. And that may have been the tipping point for me. Looks like Santa will be slipping me one of these under my tree. . . .

GB, it looks intriguing, but I haven't seen any real reviews yet. Why not save a little more and get a used tried-and-true medium format? I've even seen Hasselblads available for under $500. I know -- it's a lot more than that camera, but you KNOW you'd love a hassy, and it will last you your life.
Oh -- looks like you got it already. Well I'm excited to hear how it is. I confess to being very interested in it.

I had been toying with an older camera for a while now, but auto-exposure, two lenses and a 6x12 format for relatively little cash? That's pretty damn enticing. And if it turns out to be junk - well, they're not asking Leica levels of money here. I put it on craigslist and I'm only out the price of a couple of pizzas.
Plus I just like the look of the camera. That goes a long way in my book. (:

Dude that camera looks pretty sweet, Ive been curious about it it looks like that old polaroid instant camera. Its fancy looking which is probably gonna set u up to spend more money on a lomo camera than you should, you are probably better off buying an old yashica off ebay that has 100x better image quality, super reliable and sturdy as a rock. So I dunno if this is really worth choosing over a Holga or Diana as far as lomo goes, the cool thing about it looks like it shoots rectangle format but the larger one not the one you could shoot with the Holga mask. Anyways if you get it I ould like to see your pics feel free to post them in my lomo photography facebook group http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lomo-Phot … 0281881510 any pictures would by nice since I am starting the group.

The good news is that the LR44 batteries are super cheap (like 2 bucks for 10 of 'em) and the hot shoe should work with my strobes. The one downside is that there is no cable release for the bulb setting. Meaning any long exposures are going to have some jitter to them - provided that there isn't an easy way to cobble something together.

I think there are a bunch of diys for making cable releases and a lot of the generic cable releases fit most cameras, anyway.
I just lucked into a Mamiya 645 complete with three lenses. I'm VERY excited. I have a busy week. Can't wait to take it out! I just happened to be borrowing a friend's Bronica, already, and have just shot one roll with that. Yay for medium format!

Well, I got the first roll of film back today - I'm still scanning it now (and pictures will be forthcoming). My impression? The Belair is a shit camera - which is a damn shame, since the camera itself looks great! But I think of my initial 12 shots, only one turned out worth a damn. The rest are all blurry and occasionally under and over exposed and otherwise not as advertised. No, I wasn't expecting perfection, but I wasn't expecting something that not my low rent Diana would put to shame.
Now mind you, some of that might be the learning curve of a new camera. I wish I had more time to run another roll and experiment around a bit more to see if I could overcome the camera's limitations and idiosyncrasies - if the problem with these 11 shit shots were between the chair and keyboard. But Lomo's 14 day return policy runs out like tomorrow or Wednesday - so I gotta get it back in the mail straight away or be stuck with a 200 dollar albatross around my neck.
Oh - and then you add in this frustrating lomography imprecision, where the framing of the viewfinder was NOT even close what camera saw. I have more cropped off heads on this last roll than I have had in the last 20 years of shooting! Do I need a Through-The-Lens experience? No - but it needs to be closer than what this camera could get me!
But yeah - now that I finally have my hands on the rig? Their marketing was TOTAL snakeoil. What Lomo marketed was a stylish and top of the range Lomography camera. What I got was a stylish Lomography camera with all the inherent Lomo rubbishness that goes with it with a top of the range pricetag.

Oh that's too bad! I am unfortunately not surprised. Lomography does manage a few nice pieces but overall I think their marketing and prices go too far. I have stopped subscribing to their e-mails because it's all too tempting and too expensive for what it is. Most of their items can be bought elsewhere for a lot less.
Send it back quick and save another hundred and buy yourself an older medium format. I am really happy with my Mamiya m645. It was given to me, but prices on e-bay don't seem too bad. A Yashica TLR would be another sturdy and affordable choice.

Well, here's my first shot ever.
Day 002/365 - Too dark and mis-framed by Great Beyond, on Flickr
Now admittedly, one picture is hardly fair to judge a camera against, but the rest of the roll turned out more or less crappy too. Bad focus (which to be fair, I wasn't expecting laser precision pictures from a toy camera, but when Lomo pitches the camera as the Sharpest Toy Camera lenses we've ever done, I was hoping for something better than what I got), hard to frame and a host of other problems (like the infinity focus problem that seems to be cropping up a lot) that should have been ironed out in the QA process.
I fully expected a learning curve on this camera, so perfection right out of the gate was an unrealistic expectation. I just wish I had more time to run some rolls through it before I had to decided if I was sending it back or not. But I was at the "Return it or have a 300 dollar albatross around my neck" stage. Who knows, perhaps with those Russian glass lenses, I might have gotten good results.

So here's today's picture. This SHOULD have been dead on focused - I had the bellows extended and the focus set to about 4 feet - and yet it's soft, way softer than my Diana ever was.

Yes, it wasn't a very good portrait, but to completely misrepresent what I was shooting was - well, why bother having a viewfinder on the damn thing in the first place? It was this one that I decided to sent it back home.
