Another beauty Candice... I really enjoy having such good looks at birds we don't get here in the Pacific Northwest... Wish I could add this Verdin to my lifelist, but I will have to wait.

A huge flock of starlings visited today. They are amazingly colorful birds. And, they are very interesting birds. For more info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Starling

Very nice, Candace! I remember seeing cattle egrets in the El Paso desert near the river. Where were these?

In a lake by a golf course and restaurant in Scottsdale, AZ smile Not exactly the wild. So do you think they look like cattle egrets? He/she fit the description of great egrets only didn't seem big enough so I couldn't figure out what kind they were. I didn't look up cattle egrets. I'll check those out now.

I'm not sure, Candace. We need Ajax--he knows his birds!

Thank you tufteach.... Candace, most cattle egrets I have seen are in pastures... And going by the darker legs than that of the cattle egret and its bill,  I believe it is a common egret...The common egret is usually seen in or  around water and is larger than the cattle egret.... Great shots by the way... Beautiful.

And I forgot to mention that the what used to be called the common egret is now called as you said, a great egret...Over the years, it is fairly common for ornithologists to re-classify and alter birds names for various reasons.. sometimes they discover new species or group subspecies together with a common name... Plus, locals in different areas of the country will refer to birds by different names as well.

Well, thank you, Ajax! It's so fun to find unknown (to me) birds, butterflies, flowers, because it's fun to ID them on the internet. Thanks for verifying what he/she is.

Thanks, Ajax. There are many, many egrets and herons around here, of course. I was told the ones I saw in El Paso were cattle egrets. They hung out in farmers' fields. Many farmers thought they were eating seeds, but they were actually helping the farmers by eating insects. Part of what the wildlife rehab group did was to educate . In that area there is a great deal of superstition about birds.

Tundra Swan
Tundra swan (I'm pretty sure that's what they are) migrate to my area every winter. This is probably the best image I have taken of them---ever!

Good job Tufteach... The rippled water really adds to the shot... And yes, those are Tundras. Again over time the name has changed.. It used to be called Whistlers Swan.... The identifying mark is the yellow patch on the bill....Really nice.
