Photo Tip Contest: Show Us Your Mojo!

http://photojojo.com/temp/lomo_prizes.jpg

Attention mad scientists! It's time for the Show-Us-Your-Mojo Photo Tip Rumble!

Break out the secret ingredients, rev up the brain cells and get ready to get your hands dirty. We've teamed up with our pals at Lomography to create the ultimate photo tip extravaganza! We want to see the best ideas you've got for making amazing photos WITHOUT digital manipulation.

Let us know your sneakiest tip, trick, or accidental stroke of genius! Digital and film are both A-OK, but be sure to keep the pixels real. (We'll know if you're cheating! We have surveillance powers equal or greater to those of Santa Claus.)

Pinhole? Sure! Bleach? Why not? Genetic manipulation of your subjects to make them glow in the dark? Probably not a good idea, but if that's what you have to do, go for it.

How to enter: Post a description of your tip, and a awe-inspiring photo example showing why your tip is so awesome.

Prizes: The grand prize winner will receive an LC-A+ camera, and 4 runners-up will get a DianaF+ Hong Meow special edition camera!

Deadline: The competition will run for one week, and the last chance to submit will be midnight on September 21st PST.

Crank up your cameras and go nuts! Just please be safe and wear your hazmat suit if you use any dangerous chemicals, okay? Have fun everybody!

Laundered Pictures  For this I put a whole load of pictures in the washing machine, set the cycle to 30 degrees and let it spin. Then I took the pictures out and dried them - down side to this is you really need to make sure the washing machine is cleaned after - or your wife may get angry as she keeps finding bits of photos in her smalls. Oops.

Framing having a son i find that i have all sorts of treaures for making "art" one such thing is a sparkly pipe cleaner - bendy wire with spangly bits! I bent the wire in to shape and then using a small ammount of PVA glue stuck it to the inside of the camera between the lens and the film - meaning anything that i shot would have the shape of the cleaner as a frame.

mash ups This idea was inspired by photofits. I cut three rectangles of card to fit infront of the film inside the camera to work like a mask. each had a slit cut in it for a different part of the face. The first was for the eyes so I loaded the mask and then my friends taco and anna and i took it turns to sit and have a picture os our eyes taken we wore different glasses and what not. 24 shots later the film finished i rwound it loaded the next mask and shot our noses, 24 shots later i rewound the film loaded the next mask and shot our mouths. and mash ups was the result - though it appears i got the eyes slightly out of line - and the mask came off at one point!

Don't be scared of overexposing! Open up the back of your camera in a shady area outside for about 2 seconds and then close it really fast. You'll get crazy colors and effects. smile

Get out your craft knife, cut up a shape, glue it inside of your camera between the lens and the film and take your new lodger for a walkabout... (TIP - make sure you glue it in upside down! THINK ABOUT IT!)

Use the Tunnel Vision Lens -UPSIDE DOWN- with Colorsplash Flash to make the vignett more round and the picture looks blur like when you're dreaming...

When the 6x6 roll is over, I let it take the light to create superb lightleaks....Sometimes, the pics disappears entirely.

When you recieve your prints and it turns out they arent thaat good. Why not make them more interesting? Pour some chlorine over them. But be careful. If you add too much, the picture will disapear in white.

Use a small magnifyer. You know one of these you used as a kid when watching insects. Hold it in front of your camera and know, you are able to shoot very small things!!

When a 120roll is finished, intstead of winding it harder round the spool, undwind it so that light can reach in. This creates cool effects and makes the numbers appear on your pictures.

light drawings I grabbed a bunch of LEDs in different colours and painted in complete darkness those wonderful pictures. No Photoshop, zero manipulation. For a more detailed explanation look here:

I left a pack of Polaroid film in the car in summertime. Very scientific, I know.

I removed my holgas lens, and using gaffers tape attached the flat lens element from a disposal Kodak zoom camera. Changing my holga to a fixed focus camera with hardcore fallout in the corners. http://forum.photojojo.com/img/posted/img48cfbdf683641.jpg?url=http://farm1.static.flickr.com/52/142807736_4fea7c58d5.jpg

While i was in Barcelona i ran into a spot of luck with my Diana F+. Firstly because like most of the Lomographic cameras it is a toy camera it has lots of nooks and crannies for little bits and bobs too creep onto the negative. In this instance i got a very blue light leak and some how some sand creped onto my negative now i don't know if it got in the camera or i dropped the roll of film in the sand but it stuck to the negative and has made a textured looking smudge on my film!

This is what I tell my friends, the amateur family photographers.  Keep the light source out of the frame; step in or zoom in closer; take lots of photos; delete most of them and keep the best. Nothing as fantastic as the tips already posted, but simple and useful for better family keepsakes.

Well, my "mojo" to create some magic shots is not very original, but it's a double exposure technique that works very well to create some magic & fascinating images....
Take a first layer of underwater shots (with a Frogeye, a Fisheye submarine or a LCA+ in his Krab submarine case for example... but any analogue underwater camera will work...) with a person diving deep under water (with some bubbles it's a cool extra...) and then rewind the film and take some shots of landscapes, trees, cars or anything else out of the water. The 2 pics mixed together will have something special. For special colors, take a slide film and x-process it! smile
